Magnetically powered microbots called microwheels co-deliver tPA, and plasminogen enhance the rate of fibrinolysis in vitro by 50-fold compared to therapeutic concentrations of tPA. Osmond, Ph.D., discusses the efficacy of tPA-microwheels in vivo. Results show in a murine model of ischemic stroke, tPA-functionalized microwheels can lyse thrombi. The function of rotating magnetic fields to further enhance thrombolysis due to improved penetration into the thrombus is discussed.
